What is an Audio Transformer?

An audio transformer is an electrical device that modifies and filters an electromagnetic signal as it passes between two circuits. While their implementation is widespread, audio transformers are most commonly used in audio circuitry. This blog will discuss the basics of how audio transformers work, how they are classified, and their typical applications.

Electronic transformers are designed with several unique properties that dictate their function. The most fundamental of these properties, called isolation, is the ability to convert a signal between two circuits without them physically touching. Audio transformers share the same property but are designed to work with frequencies specific to the audible spectrum. In addition to isolation, audio transformers possess step-up and step-down abilities that allow them to increase or decrease a current's voltage level. Another unique characteristic of audio transformers is that they are bi-directional devices, which means a signal can gain voltage when traveling in one direction and lose it in reverse. Finally, audio transformers can perform impedance matching, ensuring the maximum amount of transferred power from the source to the load.

Much of an audio transformer's efficiency and performance comes down to its design. Iron, steel, cobalt, and nickel are commonly used metals for constructing a transformer's core, and each provides unique benefits and drawbacks. Generally, cores made of cobalt are more expensive than their steel counterparts but exhibit higher performance. In addition to the material used, the number of twists in the coils, which are the operational units of signal modification, will affect the way the transformer functions. For example, if the coil on the output end of the device has more windings, the output voltage will be higher than the input. Additionally, transformers will be shielded by a nickel-iron ferromagnetic alloy called "Mu-metal," which prevents harmful magnetic fields from reaching nearby sensitive equipment.

Audio transformers are classified into three primary categories, which are named after the actions they perform. The first category, impedance matching transformers, balance the source's internal resistance with the load's resistance, allowing for maximum power transfer. This system works because of an electrical engineering principle called Jacobi's law. This principle, also called the maximum power transfer theorem, states that if the load's resistance is smaller than the source, most of the power transferred will dissipate.

Step-up transformers have a different number of windings in the coils that receive and deliver current. The difference in the coils permits the current's voltage to be amplified as it passes from the source to the load. Since many pieces of equipment have different voltage requirements than their accompanying devices, transformers are used to balance the voltage. The final type of audio transformer is the step-down, which works using the same principles as the step-up but with the opposite goal.

Audio transformers are most commonly found as part of a professional audio system. Microphones, loudspeakers, amplifiers, and headphones all have different load requirements to generate proper sound vibration. Transformers can match the signals between these devices to allow for proper operation and a cohesive sound.
